Through our Rebuilding Mum & Dad series, we’ve shown something many people still believe isn’t possible:
You can rebuild strength and even improve bone health density at any stage in life.
Muscle is one of the most important organs for healthy aging. It supports metabolic health, balance, mobility, bone strength, brain health and our ability to remain independent as we grow older.
And because we naturally begin losing muscle from around our 30s onwards, building and maintaining strength is CRUCIAL.
But even if you’ve already been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis, it’s not too late to take action.
The body retains an extraordinary capacity to adapt when it is challenged appropriately.
One of the most effective ways to support both muscle and bone is through progressive resistance training — gradually and safely increasing load over time, ideally with expert guidance, especially to start.
There are two programs I personally recommend: Kaari and Starting Strength.
My parents (both in their 80s) train with the Starting Strength program using a barbell and rack in my garage gym.

Online Strength Training For Women
While barbell training is a really effective option I know it’s not practical for everyone and I’m often asked: What’s a good alternative that doesn’t require large equipment?
After researching a number of programs, one of the most impressive I’ve found in terms of both safety and results is Kaari.
Kaari is a 13-week, evidence-based digital strength program for women designed to improve strength, support bone density and reduce fracture risk.
The program combines:
- Progressive resistance training
- Mobility and yoga
- Expert coaching and guidance
- Home-based equipment that stores easily
- A supportive community of women on the same journey
What particularly stood out to me is Kaari’s strong focus on safety, education and proper progression — especially for women who may feel nervous about starting strength training after a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis.
And impressively, Kaari reports that 80% of participants saw improvements in their DEXA scan results.
