Shark Glam Styling System Review: Even I Could Use It, And There’s A Star Tool For That Salon Sleek Look

I’m going to tell you I opened the box of the Shark Glam Ceramic & Air Styling and Drying System with some trepidation.

That’s because I am hopeless at styling my own hair. I can barely handle a pair of straighteners, never mind a box containing several different styling attachments.

Styling brushes have always defeated me and, while I can now get the front of my hair looking reasonably sleek with straighteners, the back has an unfortunate tendency towards clown-like frizz.

So I wasn’t expecting the Shark Glam to be quite so easy to use.

What’s Included?

The various accessories simply clip onto the dryer base and it’s actually pretty obvious what you’re supposed to do with them – apart from the Auto Wrap Curlers which I had to watch an online tutorial to figure out.

You can dry, straighten, smooth and curl using the same system, with Shark combining high-speed airflow with heat-controlled ceramic appliances.

All in, you get:

Main Unit – cleverly designed base which acts as a decent and lightweight dryer but which you can also attach the styling tools to.

Coanda Auto-Wrap Curlers – you can use these little wands to style curls in different directions with one marked left (for your left side and the other, you guessed it, right). Once I got them figured out – turned out I was over-thinking it and all you have to do is waft the wand in front of the section of hair for it to pick it up – I thought they shaped a nice curl but they did loosen off pretty quickly.

Styling Concentrator – a handy nozzle to get a sleeker blow dry

Silki Straightening Tool – hair straighteners which are clunky but do a pretty good job. I’ve expanded on them below.

Glossi Blow-dry Tool – a clever blow-dry brush that gave me a really nice sleek finish.

What I Liked

The temperature doesn’t go higher than 150°C when styling wet-to-dry, which is particularly appealing if, like me, you’re conscious of heat damage.

But the Glossi blow-dry tool gets the gold star from me.

This is the attachment I am now using virtually every day. You simply pull your hair through it and somehow it transforms my naturally frizz-prone locks into something smoother, sleeker and bouncier – much more like I’ve actually had a proper blow-dry.

The best bit is it doesn’t take much to figure it out. There’s no complicated technique to be learned there.

I also prefer the auto curlers to trying to curl my hair with my straighteners. I don’t completely have the technique down yet, but I liked even the looser curl I get with the Shark wands (on show below).

What I Liked Less

I found the Silki straighteners slightly more awkward to use than my usual Dyson straighteners. Somehow with the heavier cable, I just couldn’t get to grips with them as well as the cordless Dyson but, after a fashion, they did a good job of creating a smooth, straight finish at a fraction of the cost.

Because the system is lightweight, I would take the Shark straightening attachment on holiday with me rather than the heavier Dyson, and I’m very happy with the basic dryer and Glossi brush.

At £319.99, this certainly isn’t a budget hair tool. But considering you’re effectively getting a dryer, straightener, smoothing/blow-dry brush and curling system in one, I think it represents reasonable value – particularly if it replaces several appliances.

In the US, the five-in-one system is the same model but with an extra finishing attachment, currently retailing for $379.99.
